How do you casually become friends with someone you've never spoken to before?

I'm a sophomore in high school, and there's this guy who's a senior. We're both in marching band. For some strange reason, I want to become his friend sooooo bad. Haha. :D I have absolutely no friend connections or anything like that, and we've never formally met or talked. What are some ways to befriend/approach him without coming off as creepy or stalkerish? The key to not appearing stalkerish is to not look desperate. If it seems like you care to much about his opinion, it just shows that you don't have much faith in yourself. Which makes you look creepy and stalkerish.
