I'm a 15 year old New Zealand girl and i'm having a Japanese exchange student for two weeks who will be my age, maybe a year older. I speak japanese, but very limited japanese and i'm not at all at all even close to being fluent, but I can hold a conversation with some I don't understands :/
How can I make friends with the language barrier? She will speak some english but is there anyway to make friends without words? What can I do/show/stuff that isn't talking? How can I make friends with someone who dosen't speak my language?
As a Korean exchange student, I'm sure I would give you the best answer you've probably wanted.
The key to be a friend of her is quite easier than you might have thought. Exchange students acutally get lots of pressure about staring conversation with native English speakers since they aren't that good at English and possbily be worried about making grammar mistakes. So what you need to do is just simply go up and talk to him/her and I'm sure that's what he/she wants. And if he/she doesn't speak much English, then just say slowly and try to explain in easy way. But I'm sure he/she would have a certain level of English skill since Japanese study English very hard.
And if he/she reacts in somewhat timorous way when you try to have a conversation, that's maybe because he/she gets afraid of speaking in English. Trust me, they need time to get used to speak in English. So be patient and make try your best to make comfortable mood and show him/her that you are gentle and are a good listener.
So summarizing it all,
1. How can I make friends with the language barrier?
-%26gt; The janapese exchange student came to your country to learn your language. So just speak in English concerning their English skill.
2. She will speak some english but is there anyway to make friends without words?
-%26gt; I didn't know the gender of that exchange student but it was a girl. Well, whatever hmm, there's no way to make friends without having a conversation and even if you could, that wouldn't be healthy.
3. What can I do/show/stuff that isn't talking?
-%26gt; I'm 100% sure she knows some Enlgish. Otherwise she wouldn't even be allowed to visit your country as an exchange student. In order to be an exchange student, student have to meet the certain level of English requirement.
So, I hope to see you hanging around with her and having fun soon. Also hope this helped you, peace. How can I make friends with someone who dosen't speak my language?
Japanese students usually speak quite good English, but here are some things you can do. Speak slowly for her, use plenty of hand gestures, body language and friendly smiles. She will appreciate your limited attempts to greet her in Japanese, but will probably be anxious to practice her English. Give her a tour of your home, show her where she will be staying, the bathroom, the kitchen. Have some small welcome gift for her, preferably something typical of New Zealand rather than of Japan. Your desire to be friends with her will shine through.
I understand how you feel since I teach Koreans and it is hard to talk to them when they don't know English. I advise you to use very simple words when talking to the Japanese exchange student. It would also help that you use actions when you talk to her. Also, if you can find some Japanese fans there and give it to her when she arrives; I think she would appreciate that. In Japanese culture, Japanese fans are considered as symbols of friendship. Hope this helps!
from my own experience i think its easier to make friend with someone with a language barrier. when i came to america, i knew limited english. surprisingly i made friends with people who didnt speak the same language as me and also knew limited english. i dont know what you could do to improve the situation, but just act normal and everthing will be fine. you can mix japanese with english and trust me, somehow you two will understand each other perfectly :) best of luck to you
just smile is always works!
talk a lot with her. spend time with her like.. go out and show her some your favorite places.
she definitely want to study english so you better help her understand english at classroom as well.
i hope you're gonna help her in different different ways!
Games and sports are great ways to interact without needing a lot of words. You'll find that the more you hang out, the more words you both learn.
No lo se, pero seria bueno aprender otros idiomas.
I don't Know, i think could be good to learn more languages, and don't let ';your friend'; learn yours.
try as much as you can say, or describe a word you dont know, draw pictures, or act it....
Buy them some Ramen and some Hello Kitty stuff.
Movies always work too, plus sports.
